Freida Shurtz Schmidt, 100, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 9:56 A.M. January 22, 2018 at SSM Health gtood Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born August 2, 1917 in Waltonville, Illinois. She first married Arthur Glenn Shurtz on March 31, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and he preceded her in death on October 16, 1974. She later married Maurice Ray Schmidt on January 28, 1990 in Lake Wales, Florida and he survives in Mount Vernon.

Freida is survived by her husband, Maurice Schmidt of Mount Vernon, Illinois; three daughters, Martha Rae Wodraska and husband, David of Tucson, Arizona, Glenna Kearns and special friend, Flint Turner of Bailey, Colorado, and Deanne Witzel of Woodlawn, Illinois; two sons, Gene Shurtz and wife, Diane of Tower Hill, Illinois and Bill Shurtz of Woodlawn, Illinois; grandchildren, Mike Wodraska, Eric Wodraska, Dana Wodraska, Shane Witzel and wife, Leslie, Kerry Witzel and wife, Lisa, Molly Kearns, Joe Kearns and friend, Jennifer, Jen Kusak and husband, Joey, and Jason Shurtz and wife, Elieen; and several great grandchildren.

Mrs. Schmidt was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; two brothers, Vechal and Roy Frank Gilbert; and three sisters, Gladys Newell, Melva Beckham, and Marjorie Peterson.

Freida worked as a teacher in Jefferson County for 32 years, spending her last 18 years at Woodlawn Grade School. She was a member of West Long Prairie Christian Church, a lifetime member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and the Jefferson County Teachers Association. She was an avid Woodlawn Cardinals Basketball fan and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
