Robert was the son of Robert Gibbs and Mary Shrimpton of Boston, Massachusetts. Following the death of his father, his mother married Samuel Sewell.

Robert was married in Providence, Rhode Island on 26 June 1723 to Amey (Whipple) Crawford, the widow of Captain John Crawford, and the daughter of Colonel Joseph Whipple and Alice Smith, all of Providence.
