Her maiden name was Ipekjian, which was the same name as the larger Ipekjian (later Fabricatorian) family, presumably there is a relation between them but her parents names aren't known. She married Sarkis Basmajian who had five known children. The first two children Annakhas and Dikran were born in 1869-1870 and then no children were known to be born for another decade. It is possible that either there were some children born in that period who died young and not recorded, or even that Vartouhi was a second wife, though there is no known information to suggest that. If she was the mother to the first two, then she was born in the early 1850s, but if she wasn't she could have been younger and born in the 1860s. Her later three known children were Bulbul, Haroutune, and Yeghisapet born between 1880-1886. Her son Haroutune described her as short and dark, unlike her husband who was large with blue eyed. Vartouhi and Sarkis died on Mondays a week apart of typhoid in 1892 or near it. While the location of her burial cannot be confirmed, the Armenian Apostolic Christians of Arapkir were said to have been buried around the Sourp Asdvadzadzin Cathedral at the time, and stones can still be found at the site dated to the time of her death so she is listed there as a presumption.
