Lois Elaine (Bender) Davis

Lois Elaine (Bender) Davis, 78, a long-time resident of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Homestead Village Retirement Community. Born November 11, 1939 and raised in Gallitzin, PA, she was the daughter of the late Paul V. and Catherine M. (Burkhart) Bender.

Elaine was a 1957 graduate of Gallitzin High School. She earned her R.N. from Roxborough Memorial Hospital in 1960 and joined the U. S. Navy, where she served as a nurse for two years. Elaine then moved to Lancaster County to be with family while her husband, Edward Davis, to whom she married in 1965 and divorced in 2000, was in the Vietnam War and worked for Lancaster General Hospital. Upon his return, she lived in Charlottesville, VA for five years followed by five years in Arlington, VA. In 1983, Elaine returned to her beloved Lancaster County where she raised her family on Manor Avenue as a thirty year resident of Millersville.

Elaine was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast, who enjoyed classical music, playing scrabble, spending time with her family, and enjoying a great cup of coffee. Her laughter could fill an entire house and her love of Christmas was rivaled by few.

She is survived by her daughters; Jennifer Meyers, wife of Christopher Meyers of Lancaster, and Amanda Gallagher, wife of Curtis Gallagher of Baltimore, MD; her grandchildren, Joshua and Samantha Meyers; her brothers, Paul Bender (wife Linda) of Mount Joy, PA and Brian Bender (wife Debra) of Nashville, TN. Elaine was a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, Nana, and “Aunt E” to eleven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip Bender.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Christian Prayer Service from the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home-Sullivan Home, 121 South Prince Street, Lancaster, PA 17603 (on-site parking with attendants) on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 11AM, with the Very Reverend Bernardo Pistone, officiating. Military Honors will be accorded at the funeral home. Friends may call at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home- Lancaster on Friday morning between 9-11AM. There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Demetrius Catholic Church, Gallitzin, PA. Interment will be held in the adjoining parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Remembrances can be made in Elaine’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
