William May, Jr. (son of William Sr. May and Anne Unknown) was born Abt. 1741 in Virginia, and died 1807 in Pendleton District, SC.He married Lucy Davis on Abt. 1760, daughter of William Davis, Sr. William Davis, Jr. mar. Joice Johnson; their son was Chesley Davis of Randolph Co., AL.

William was known as William the Carpenter. There were four Mays who purchased patents in Anson County, North Carolina from 1769 to 17775: John, Phillip, William Sr. and William the Carpenter.

In 1778, William the Carpenter sells 640 acres of land to Phillip Gathings. The land is on the southwest side of the Peedee River on the Lick Branch of Gold's fork of Brown Creek. This land had been granted to William's father in 1775.

William was in the 1790 and 1800 census of Anson County, North Carolina before moving to Pendleton District, South Carolina around 1805. He served in the Revolutionary War. His pay voucher, signed by him as William May, Carp. was issued for the counties of Anson, Montgomery and Richmond, North Carolina.

The following is a typed copy of the Will of William May, copied by the Works Progress Administration (WPA):

In the Name of God Amen I, William May, Carpenter, of the District of Pendleton and State of South Carolina being Very Sick and Loe in Body but in perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for it Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die do make and Ordain this my last will and Testament, and touching worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased god to bless me within this life I Give and Devise and Dispose of the Same in manner and as follows

Item - I Give and bequeath to my wife Lucy May the plantation I now Live on and all my moveable Estate for hir peaceably to possess, dureing the time She remains my widow

Item - I Give and bequeath to my Son William May one Negroe Girl Named Fillis and three Hundred and Twenty acris of Land Lying on the waters of Thompsons Creek for him peaceably to possess

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Philip May one Negroe boy Named George for him peaceabley to possess

Item I Give and bequeath to my Son John May one Negroe boy named Charly for him peaceable to possess

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Daniel May one Negroe Girl Named Amey for him peaceabley to possess

Item I Give and bequeath to my Two sons John May and Daniel May my land on Jones' Creek on the upper Side of Stanfills big branch Crossing said Creek Direct to the Dividing branch then up said branch to a Sweet gum then S 40 East to the back line by Merais all above Said Two branches and line for them peaceable to possess and the branch Called Addams Spring branch from my Old line down to the Creek, then up the Creek by the water to the mouth of the branch that runs by my son John Mays fence, then up said branch to the fork then up the South prong to the back Line the upper part to John May the Lower part to Daniel May as here proscribed

Item I Give and bequeath to my Daughter Judeth Byrd one Negroe boy Named Harrey for her peaceabley to possess

Item I Give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Pace one negroe Girl named Laney for hir peaceabley to possess

Item I also will that the rest of my Estate Shall be Equally Divided between all my Children at my wife Lucy May Death or marriage

Item I will and Desire that at the time of the Distribution between my Children that Daniel May Shall Have a Negro woman named Mary in his port of the Estate

Item I do hearby Empower my Executors to sell my lands in North Carolina Containing Two Tracts only I also appoint my Son William May, Philip May, John May, and Daniel May to be my Executors of this my last will and Testament for them to act as above will,d and written --- and I do hereby disallow revoke revoke---and disannull all and Every Other former testaments wills, Legacies, bequeaths and Executors by me in any wise before named --- willed bequeathed ratified and Confirmed this and no other to be my last will and Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 12th Day of November in the year of Our lord one thousand Eight Hundred and seven
