Odell Clinton Atwood, II was born on Christmas Day 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas; he was called home to the Lord on Christmas Day 2017 while living in Eugene, Oregon with his wife, Vicki Atwood. Odell and Vicki had six wonderful years together before he left for heaven on the day he turned 96.
He married Helene Ruth King on August 1, 1943; they were married for sixty years. He is survived by two sons from his marriage to Helene; Odell Clinton Atwood III and Daniel Lee Atwood; Helene preceded him in death in 2004. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Andrew Atwood, Ann Castro, Jon Atwood, Michelle Alfonso, Julie Atwood-Atkinson, and T.J. Atwood. He was the great-grandfather of eight, and great-great-grandfather of one.
Odell was blessed to have found love again while teaming with Vicki Solomon while volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program; they married on July 7, 2012. He is survived by his spouse, Vicki Atwood, and his three stepchildren; Ricky Thibodeaux, Deanna Schifferdecker, and Lyn Leake.
Odell left a lasting legacy for his family. His legacy includes supporting his family by managing Fort Worth's largest paper route during the depression, being a cowboy in his teens with his pony Joe, and serving our country in World War II. During his lifetime, he raised and supported a loving family.
Odell started out as a private, went through Officer's Training and became a first lieutenant with the 691st Field Artillery Battalion while serving six years Active Duty in the US Army. During that service, he spent eighteen months on the front lines in Europe during World War II as a Forward Observer tasked with adjusting artillery fire on the enemy. He completed his time with the Army Reserves as a captain in the 49th Armored Division.
Odell had over forty years of retail department store experience as a buyer buyer and store manager. He retired in 1986 after twenty-four years with Dillard's Department stores.
His compassionate heart was demonstrated through many years of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, the Presbyterian Night Shelter, the Salvation Army, and the Union Gospel Mission.
