British Royal Navy Admiral. He served in the Royal Navy from 1831 until 1882. The son of British Army General Sir Henry John Cumming, he received naval education at the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth, England. Among his commands include the HMS Rattler (1849 to 1851), the HMS Gorgon (1854), the HMS Conflict (1854 to 1855), the HMS Glatton (1855 to 1856), the HMS Emerald (1859 to 1863), and as Naval commander-in-chief of the East Indies (1872 to 1875). He saw action in the Syrian War and Crimean War and was awarded Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He died at the age of 75.
