Stanley Mayes, (1948-2017), The Man. The Enforcer. The King of His Castle. Old Blue Eyes. Nana’s Honeypot. Our Pappy.

On Friday, December 8, 2017, Stanley Mayes, 69, of Knoxville, Tennessee charmed his way into heaven with his piercing blue eyes. His Paul Newman/Clint Eastwood looks and witty humor attracted more ladies than a shoe sale at Dillard’s. Although the ladies adored him, he had only one true love, Dianne, his wife of 50 years who tirelessly cared for him throughout his lengthy illness.

A native of Knoxville, Stan was extremely passionate about Vols football. Nothing could keep him from watching his beloved Volunteers on Saturdays.

As a marine, Stanley was tough. Until 1991 that is. Once his three granddaughters were born, he became putty in their hands. In fact, his favorite thing to do was to spoil them (“Do you need a $20 spot?”). He once said, “I was a millionaire before my granddaughters were born, but they are worth every penny.”

As a member of First Baptist Concord, Stanley enjoyed hearing The Word and worshipping through First Baptist’s fabulous choir.

Music made him happy. You could often hear him picking the guitar, singing an Eagles tune or an old 60’s song.

Honest and hardworking, Stanley loved his job. For more than 40 years, he traveled throughout Tennessee and Kentucky selling building materials for both Dealers Warehouse and Dyke Industries. It really wasn’t work to him because he looked forward to it every day. He was so fond of his customers and coworkers that he worked as long as he could.

Stanley loved butterscotch pie, candy orange slices, a good cigar, walking on the beach, seeing every action movie with his bride, and eating out at restaurants with his family (but they better have decent sweet tea and a good basket of bread or he wouldn’t be back).

Fun-loving with a dry sense of humor, Stanley had many friends over the years (too many to name), but his best buddy was his only son, Joe, his loyal breakfast companion every morning.

Stanley is preceded in death by his mother, Georgette Johnson Mayes, his father, Claude Lee Mayes, and his older sisters Linda Mayes and Betty Mayes.

He is survived by his wife Dianne, son Joseph, daughter-in-law Christen; granddaughters, Dr. Madison Hannay and her husband Jake, Lauren Mayes, and Isabelle Mayes; brother Coy Mayes and his wife Irene; sister Alma Smelser Johnson and her husband Dr. Doyle Johnson; brother Donald Mayes and his wife Trish.

The family will receive friends at the chapel of First Baptist Concord, 11704 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37934, on Monday, December 11, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral service, officiated by Pastors Victor Lee and Bill Delph, will follow at 7 p.m. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Bookwalter Cemetery for the graveside service with full military honors by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the nurses at Parkwest CCU for their wonderful care, and a heartfelt thanks to his special caretakers, Bobby and Gabby Heatwole. You will be missed, Stan the Man.
