Obituary
Sobrina Ellen, daughter of George T. and Laura Jessee, and wife of John Hern died at the home of her parents at Centralia on the 24th day of September, 1904.
She was born in Russel county, Virginia, on the 25th day of July, 1872. Sobrina was about seven years old when the family moved to Kansas and located near Centralia. She was educated in the common schools of the "Prairie State" and grew to young womanhood in her parents' home. Her childhood years were happy and cheerful as the birds that sang in the trees about her father's home. When about 12 years of age an accident caused the loss of an eye, yet even this affliction did not rob the dear girl of her cheerful disposition.

She was married to John Hern on the 4th day of October, 1894. For a few years they remained in Kansas on a farm. Mrs. Hern's failing health caused them sto move to Oklahoma, hoping that the milder climate of that southern land might bring back health to the cheek and happiness to the heart. But alas for human hopes. The flower that had bloomed in beauty and sent forth its sweet fragrance to cheer and gladden others, continued to wither and fade. After four years of suffering and pain, she, with her husband and children, returned to the home of her childhood to die. They arrived here on the 2nd day of June. Home and loved ones seemed to revive the fading flower for a time, but days of pain and nights of wakefulness and watching followed each other in quick succession until on the night of the 24th of September just as the clock marked the hour of 10, her tired heart ceased to beat and her spirit took its flight to the better land.

Mrs. Hern's life was adorned with the incorruptable ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God, of great price. She was a member of the Christian church and always adorned the doctrine of her profession by a Godly walk and a chaste conversation. She died as the Christian dieth. To her mother and the watchers by her dying bed she calmly spoke of her abiding faith that the Divine Savior would lead her safely through the valley of the shadow of death.

All that a kind husband, loving parents, affectionate sisters and brothers and the most skillful physician could do was done for her, but all this care, tenderness and skill could only smooth her pathway to the grave.

Mrs. Hern leaves a husband and two little boys, Karl and Floyd, aged respectively 6 and 4 years. Two infant children preceded her to the grave. She also leaves a father and mother, five sisters and two brothers and many friends and relatives to mourn her untimely death.

Funeral services were held from her parents home, on Monday the 26th. An unusually large number of friends and neighbors and school mates filled the house to overflowing. Sobrina was loved from her childhood up by all who knew her, was evidenced by the tears and sympathy of the people on her funeral day. The beautiful hymns, "The Comforter Has Come", "Never Alone," "Near the Cross," and "Sweetly Resting" were sung by her young friends at the funeral and the writer spoke from the comforting words of the Savior, "Weep not, she is not dead but sleepeth." Luke 8:52.
Interment in Centralia cemetery.
