A native of Graham County, he was the son of the late Jake and Ethel Stratton Orr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three of his siblings: brothers, Hubert Orr, and Rev. Jay Orr; and sister, Patsy Orr Martin.
Burl was a graduate of Robbinsville High School and a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He lived and worked in Fontana Village for many years before moving back to Robbinsville, where he worked in a number of different positions, including insurance and furniture sales. After retiring, Burl continued to stay active, delivering Meals on Wheels and working at the Senior Center.
A longtime member of Robbinsville First Baptist Church, Burl served as a deacon for many years. He loved to sing and was a member of the choir and a founding member of the Robbinsville Quartet. Burl was a 60+ year member and past master of Robbinsville Masonic Lodge; he was also a 60+ year member and past patron of Robbinsville Eastern Star Chapter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, his devoted daughter, brother, sister, brother-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 pm Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. Burl’s nephews, Rev. Tommy Joe Martin and Dr. Jerry Carringer will officiate. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Robbinsville Masonic Lodge #672. The family will receive friends at the Chapel from 5:00 till 7:00 pm prior to the service. Committal Services will be held at Lone Oak Cemetery at 11:00 am Monday, November 27, 2017, where there will be a Flag Presentation conducted by the NC National Guard Honor Guard.
