Katherine "Kay" Byers Avery, 89 Private family services were held this week for Katherine "Kay" Byers Avery who passed away at Hilltop Care Center on Dec. 15,2001. Kay was born March 7, 1912 to Frank C. and Myra Lyon Byers in Cedar Rapids. She ., graduated from high school in Mt. Vernon Seminary in Washington, D.C. and continued her education at Grinnell College and later graduated from the University of Iowa. Kay married Alden D. Avery on Oct. 10, 1936. She was a respected area artist who worked in multiple disciplines: watercolors, acrylic, stained glass, enameling, wood carving and mixed media. She was active in Delta Gamma, P.E.O. and the Spencer Family YMCA. She is survived by her three children, Susan Lewis of Lake Panorama, Iowa and Scottsdale, Ariz.; Stephen Avery of Wah-peton; and Gan Aver of Ellyn, 111.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Ganson Byers of Green Valley, Ariz, and Frank Byers of Cedar Rapids and Sanibel Island, Fla.; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Alden. Warner funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
