Radioman Second Class Guy Stearman (NSN: 3420757), United States Navy, was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 6 May 1942, and was held as a Prisoner of War until returned to U.S. Military control at the end of hostilities in August 1945.
Son of Henry Guy and Maxie Sly (Richards) Stearman, Guy attended North High School in Wichita then served in the United States Navy from 1937 to 1945. He married Nola Jean Morris on Jan. 19, 1946, in Wichita, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2005. He also attended Wichita State University then worked for Boeing Aircraft from the 40s till his retirement. He was a member of the Ex POW Association and Disabled American Veterans. He was a first cousin to the famous Lloyd Stearman, Find A Grave Memorial# 15621075. He moved to Coldwater in 2000. Guy was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Glenn, Gail, and Melford Stearman; 3 sisters: Mabel Dadisman, Maurice Peterson and infant sister Ila Lafern Stearman; and is survived by one sister Wanda Lee and sister-in-law Doris; 3 daughters: Janet, Kara, and Teresa; 3 grandchildren: Charles & Sherri, and Lhando (Leo); and 2 great grandchildren: Charles & Ashley. He was 86. Burial was with full military honors by the U S Navy and was also attended by members of the Patriot Guard Riders. In December 2010, Guy received the Purple Heart posthumously due to the tenacious efforts of his daughter Teresa who knew he qualified for and deserved one.
