Penelope Ann Scharer, 86, of West Lafayette, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 4:47 p.m. at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 3, 1931 in Lafayette, Indiana to the late Clayton E. and Eva E. (Haley) Anderson. Penelope’s marriage was to Daniel “Don” Scharer, he preceded her in death in August of 2004.

Professionally, Don and Penny founded Don Scharer Masonry in 1951. She was an integral part of the success of that business. They made quite a team. She was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. She had a true passion for antiques, loved tending her beautiful flower gardens, and enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for family and friends (her apple pies and yeast rolls were the best!). Penny had strong opinions, was very independent, and liked things done right...the first time around. She was loving and generous and helped many people, both family and friends, during their time of need throughout her lifetime. Penny cherished time spent with her family, especially the holidays, where she always paid attention to the little details that made every gathering special.

Penelope is survived by her four children, Terri (husband: Butch) Knowles of Lafayette, IN, Randy (wife: Sally) Scharer of Lafayette, IN, Mark (wife: Jill) Scharer of Cutler, IN, and Jim Scharer of West Lafayette, IN; three sisters, Barbara (husband: Gene) Metzger, Patricia Koning, and Sheri Renick; grandchildren, Tara Sprowl, Jon (wife: Paige) Karberg, Jessica (husband: Kyle) Achor, Jason Scharer, Lindsey (husband: Caleb) Stevens, Sam Scharer, Anna Scharer, Chris (wife: Teresa) Knowles, Steve (wife: Carmen) Knowles, and Ben Knowles; 23 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Penelope is preceded in death by sister, Carolyn Smith; brother, Kim Anderson; grandson, Daniel Knowles; and brother-in-law, Mike Koning.
