Notes from one of Albert's granddaughters:
Albert (Pete) came from a family of 14. He lived in a log cabin, which was over 100 years old and was still standing in 1979. He left home at the age of 9 to work for his room and board. He was nicknamed Shafter after General Shafter who served in the Spanish-American war at the time he was born. General Shafter rode a white horse and Pete was a fat little baby so they nicknamed him Shafter.

After Pete married Amelia, he farmed for a time and also did carpentry work for 20 years. In 1928, they moved to Ft. Dodge, Iowa to lay carpet and linoleum. In 1935, he moved his family to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and started Peterman and Haes floor covering, along with his son Emory and son-in-law Frederick (Bud) Haes. His folks were Methodist, he was Lutheran. Pete retired January 12, 1971

Grandpa was a storyteller and was full of mischief. You could see it in his eyes. He was always teasing everyone and always had a joke to tell. He loved little kids and dogs and loved to go fishing.
