Grandma Stacy
(Julia Mindo Crouch)

Julia Mindo Crouch was born May 18, 1877 in Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas. She stood 5 Ft - 2 Inches Tall, had light brown hair, blue eyes and a slender build. I have been told she was part American Indian too. Her father was William Preston Crouch and her mother Mary A Pruitt. Mary passed away on July 6, 1877. Her father remarried when she was about four years old to Mary Ellen (Moore) Rose-Crouch. Julia had an older sister Dora Malinda and from her father's new union came three half siblings Alice, Janie & Jim Crouch also four step siblings Bill, Emma, Virgie & Dona Rose. They had a full house to say the least.

Julia married James Lawrence Stacy on June 17, 1894 in Dallas County, Texas, from this marriage there were fourteen children, but James & Julia only had the privilege of raising eight of them. Those children were Viola, Bonnie, Ocie, Ludie, Ida, Cecil, Vernie, and Cleo. Their first child Nannie was taken by the croup at about nine months old. Their next two children Hattie & Freddie caught the measles and passed on in March of 1899. She had two stillborn boys and one baby died right after he was born.

Back in her day Julia could really dance. The neighbors would come from miles around and camp out in their covered wagons. The girls would scrub the wood floors with lye soap and boiling water and the people would stay three or four days, just to dance and visit.

Grandma and Grandpa Stacy were of The Baptist Faith. Grandma Stacy was a homemaker, she did like to square a quilt and crochet. She loved to can fruits and vegetables and she always had a garden. She preferred Folgers coffee and could tell the difference when you made another brand. She always used a cup and saucer. When any of us little kids were around she would pour some coffee into the saucer and let us drink it. Her favorite candy was chocolate covered cherries. She loved the color blue and enjoyed watching Gunsmoke & Bonanza on television. At Christmas time she kept foil wrapped chocolate santas and snowmen in her bedside table for us kids. She also kept butter mints in her nightstand after she went into the rest home. Grandma Stacy loved the holidays because it was a time to be spent with family. She loved to play dominoes and she loved to work jig-saw puzzles. As her eye sight started to fail her, she used a magnifying glass to see the puzzle pieces.

To the day of her passing Grandma Stacy only took Geritol for Iron, Rolaids for her stomach and did not take any prescription medications. She was rarely ill and had no allergies. She was very alert her memory was good, remembering things of the past and present. Even though her eyes were weak, they were clear and bright.

Grandma Stacy passed away on July 18, 1973 in Fresno, California at the age of 96. She was survived by 8 children, 32 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
