James Elbert Abel, 90, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Hospice of Chattanooga.

He was born in Dayton on June 7, 1927, to the late James Moss Abel and Gladys Lowry Abel. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Felix Abel, Clifton Abel and sister Helen Laher.
Elbert lived in Dayton most of his life. He served his county with the US Army in Korea and was the co-owner operator of Abel Hardware for thirty-seven years. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was the church clerk for 21 years and sang in the choir for 40 years.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Elbert will be held on Thursday at noon in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Milton Knox officiating. He will be laid to rest in Abel Cemetery with military honors followed by a white dove release.
