After serving in the U.S. Navy, William pursued a career as an HVAC senior technician and supervisor for the U.S. General Services Administration, working primarily at GSA's central shop.
He was a kind, generous man who loved his family. Always a true gentleman.
He enjoyed dancing, golfing, boating, fishing, basketball, fast-pitch softball and duckpin bowling. In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary S. Godfrey; his three sisters, Norma Pickett, Ardel Kans, and Beverly Godfrey, and his brother Charles Godfrey.
He is survived by his son, Steven Godfrey of Edgewater; one sister, Shirley Torpey of Ocean City, MD; one step-daughter, Evelyn Swenson of WI, long-time companion Veronica Frostbutter of VA, and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Friends are invited to celebrate William's life from 10 am until a funeral service begins at 11 am on Friday, October 13, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 4 Wallace Manor Road, Edgewater.
Burial will be private.
