Selfville in Blount County, Alabama, was named for Vincent Garner Self Sr. (1798-1869), who lived and died there and was said to be buried at "Selfville Cemetery," also called the Self Cemetery near Self Branch. Husband of Louisa Loggins, father of Vincent Garner Self Jr. (1834-1929), and uncle of Vincent Garner Self II (1815-1900) who reportedly married his aunt Louisa's younger sister Mahala Loggins.
Larry Brown stated that the Self or Selfville cemetery was wooded when he visited it some years ago. "All I've heard it called is Selfs cemetery. The only grave I found with a readable marker was Sarah, wife of William Self."
Later Self family members were buried at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Obituary of Mrs. J.L. Self (nee Malinda Thomas) in The Alabama Southern Democrat, 24 July 1924, states that she was buried "at Selfville Cemetery," and she is buried at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery (ref., People and Things from the Blount County, Alabama Southern Democrat 1920-27 (2012) by Robin Sterling, p.190).

The Self family originated in England, came to Westmoreland County, Virginia in the 1600s, later to Tennessee and eventually to Selfville, Alabama.
