Mrs. Ethel Acquard, whose body was brought from New York to Jamestown and interred in Lake View Cemetery on Monday, was murdered by a boarder in her home, according to the New York Times, of May 18, which gave the following account of the occurrence.
Mrs. Ethel Acquard, 35 years old, was shot three times and killed last week by Jack McCready, 25, a boarder, who ended his own life with a bullet through the temple while neighbors were clamoring to get into Mrs. Acquard's apartment at 615 East 138th street, the Bronx, where the tragedy took place.
Following a quarrel about his board bill McCready, who is an Italian, ordered Mrs. Acquard's nine-year-old daughter, Dorothy, out of the dining room, then shot the other three times. The little girl ran back into the room at the sound of the third shot and found her mother dead on the floor.
She said she was without relatives or friends and District Attorney Glennon ordered her taken to the rooms of the Children's Society.
Mrs. Acquard was born at Celoron 36 years ago and had made her home in Jamestown up to about 20 years ago, when she moved to Union City, Pa. and later to New York. She was Ethel Cheney, daughter of the late Henry N. and Nellie A. Cheney of this city, who are buried in Lake View cemetery. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Gladys Doane of Union City, Pa.
Attorney Charles H. Wiborg went to New York last week to transact some legal business for Mrs. Acquard, only to learn after his arrival there that she had been murdered. He accompanied the body to this city and a f unreal service was held Monday morning in Lake View cemetery. Rev. Leroy S. Cass, pastor of the Buffalo Street M. E. church officiating. Among those present at the service where Mrs. Gladys Doane, sister of the murdered woman, and H. L. Stern, a brother-in-law, both of Union City.
