Dr. Bemus was the second physician in Meadville, PA beginning in 1807. He practiced medicine into the 1840's when he became more involved in his milling interests between Meadville and Saegertown.
He was trained in medicine under two of his uncles and also attended courses at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine.
His father moved from eastern New York to Chautauqua County in 1805. They settled near what is now Bemus Point.
