Born on the Stadstadeiet farm to Andreas Andersen (b. 11 April 1827, Granseiet, Gran, Norway; d. bet 1872-1880) and Randi Hansdtr.

His parents left Norway in 1872 and took a homestead in Lakeville Township, Grand Forks Co., ND about 1 1/2 miles west of Middle Grove Church.

Otto left Norway on 12 Nov 1874 bound for Minnesota. In 1889 he married Hansine Helgeson. The couple had 10 children - and adopted the son of Otto's daughter Emma Anderson Kalias after she and her husband died in 1922.
