Mrs. Conant died May 7 in Toronto General Hospital at age 104. A funeral was held Monday in Oshawa. She was the only daughter of the late Progressive Conservative senator E. D. Smith of Winona-based E.D. Smith Co., which makes fruit products.
Born in Vineland, she went to Havergal College in Toronto and the McDonald Hall school for young women in Guelph.
Mrs. Conant received many honors for her public service. She was made a Dame of Grace of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in 1978, when she was 90. She was presented with the Coronation Medal when King George VI was crowned in 1937, and Canada's Centennial Medal in 1967.
Her interested included tennis, riding, sailing, basketball, baseball, hunting, shooting, fishing and camping.

Verna Rowena Smith was born on April 23, 1888. She was the daughter of Ernest D'Israeli Smith and Christina Ann Smith. Her mother was the first President of the Women Institute of Canada in Winona Division, Ontario. She had two brothers: Brigadier Armand Armstrong Smith and Leon Launcelot Smith.
Verna Rowena Smith studied at the Toronto's Havergal College and lived in Ottawa where her father served as an MP (Member of Parliament). She met her future husband at her coming out party in 1911 at Hederleigh, the family House, in Grimsby, Ontario. She married Gordon Daniel Conant on June 25 1913 in Wentworth County, Ontario. Gordon Daniel Conant was a lawyer from Oshawa, future Mayor of Oshawa, attorney general of Ontario and 12th Premier of Ontario. While raising her family, Verna Rowena Conant became active in her community and organizations. She became Honorary president of the Oshawa General Hospital of the women's auxiliary, the Women's Institute, The Oshawa Historical Society and the Girl Guides. They had 3 children: Geneviève Conant, Douglas Conant, and Roger Conant. Verna Rowena Conant died in Oshawa in May 1992.
