South Carolina Death Record
Name: Derrick Gregory
Age: 3 years, 5 months
Born: 15 Jan 1911, Charleston, SC
Died: 10 Jul 1914, Roper Hospital
Father: J. G. Gregory X-- See note below.
Mother: Lizzie Gregory
County of Death: Charleston, SC, USA
Certificate Number: 001015
---
Note: Death certification contains contradictions about birth date. The certificate says he was three years, five months old; the Ancestry.com transcription says he was 0 years old. The typed date of birth was altered by a handwritten change. The change seems to be a confusion with the birth date of his brother John Irvin Gregory.

In January 1911, Elizabeth was still married to Joseph Manton Barrineau who did not die until July 12, 1912. Therefore, Derrick's correct surname was Barrineau.

Note: At Lane, near Andrews, SC, was a railroad depot to which bodies were shipped for burial in Andrews or in adjacent areas of Williamsburg County or Georgetown County.

Derrick's maternal ancestors were buried in Elim Methodist Church Cemetery, in the Bloomingvale section of Williamsburg County. However, because his death certificate does not name a cemetery and no tombstone is known for his grave, the contributor considers his body to have been lost in the sense that its burial location is unknown.

Find A Grave contributor Jeanette Todd has made the following suggested edits.

My Dad, John Irvin Gregory told me his father, John Gunther Gregory took his deceased step brother Derrick by train to Salters to be buried there. Dad said his father John Gunther was not Derrick's father but entered his name to facilitate the burial.

Jeanette also wrote: My grandmother's name should be Elizabeth Burkett Barrineau Gregory Maree. I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Elizabeth and John Gunther.

Information in my family tree agrees with all of these surnames and also says that Elizabeth's full maiden name was Margaret Elizabeth Burkett. --RDL
