In Memoriam

Died—In Grand Island, Tuesday, April 3rd, 1888, at 5:15 o'clock a.m., Mrs. Mary Grace Dunphy, wife of P. Dunphy, aged 43 years, eleven months and eight days. The deceased was born in Ireland, and emigrated to this country when a little child, with her parents, who still reside in New York city, and who through the infirmities incident in old age, were prevented from coming to take a last farewell of their loved child.

Mrs. Dunphy was a christian in every sense of the word; a devout Catholic, without prejudice, giving to every charity with no regard to act or creed, passing along the stream of time "with malice towards none, and a broad womanly charity for all", until the tide came in, and in the very midday of human existence—quiet and unostentatious, as had been her life—so it went out—crossing the great ocean that divides Time from Eternity, and in the early morning ere the sun was risen—the spirit of the long suffering one was in the presence of her God. Mrs. Dunphy and husband were among the early settlers of this city, and were proud of the rapid growth and prosperity of their western home.

Here several of their children were born; and here they intended to spend the remainder of their days, enjoying the competence of their honesty and industry had secured for them; but an all wise Creator decreed otherwise, and the veil which hides the visible from the invisible has been drawn aside, to admit into its sacred portals the form of a faithful wife, a loving mother, a true friend and a sincere christian woman.

Thursday, April 5th, after all that mortal hand could do and sympathetic heart suggest in preparing the deceased for her earthly tenement, the solemn and ever impressive obsequies of the Roman Catholic church were preformed by Rev. Father Lynch of Wood River, assisted by Rev. Father Walsh of Plum Creek—the former celebrating and chanting the requiem high mass, while the latter delivered the panegyric and a most excellent one it was, not only in praise and respect to the dead, but full of admonition, and consolation to the congregation present. The floral gifts were beautiful, and the designs very appropriate, being a cross and crown, combined, a harp, lyre, pillow inscribed Mother, a cross and wreath. Many other designs were ordered from the East, but were received too late for the funeral.

Hundreds of friends and neighbors, followed the remains to their resting place, and as the casket was lowered, and the requiesce in pace, pronounced, from every heart went a fervent Amen. Eight children with their father are left to mourn the loss that can never be replaced, and the heartfelt sympathy of the community is tendered them in their bereavement.
