He settled in a settlement of Norwegians about 16 miles northwest of Eureka. He was a soldier in the Civil War. He married Helga Tomine "Minnie" Johnson the daughter of Baeruld Johnson, who came from Norway and settled in Wisconsin. From Wisconsin they came by boat to Westport (now Kansas City), and from there in three covered wagons they came to Greenwood County and made their home on a farm just east of the Fall River Lutheran Church.
