James P. Sumner, 84 of Gate City, passed away on September 20, 2017 at Holston
Valley Medical Center with family and friends by his side following a brief
illness.

He was retired from AFG Industries (Maintenance Department) after 28 years of
service and was a Navy Veteran and Mason. Jim was saved at an early age and was
a member of Glen Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Reba Anderson Sumner;
brother, Harold Sumner.

Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ruth Baker Sumner of the home;
brothers, Lloyd Sumner of Ellijay, GA and W.C. Sumner of Kingsport; sister,
Willena Pruitt of Cahutta, GA; several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly;
he also leaves his church family and many children of all ages, which he loved
to spoil.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 23,
2017 at Oak Glen Baptist Church, 2816 Yuma Road, Gate City, VA.

A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with Pastor Danny
Sykes officiating. Music will be provided by the Oak Glen Singers.

An entombment service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Memorial Park
(Mausoleum #1). Pallbearers will be Arvil James, Carlton James, Phillip Sumner,
Ty Phillips, Tim Salyers, Anthony Odle, Buddy Anderson and Trevor Johnson. Those
wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:55 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oak Glen Baptist
Church, Building Fund, 2816 Yuma Road, Gate City, VA 24251.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at
Holston Valley Medical Center and NHC for the care and kindness shown to Jim
during his illness.
