The fourth child of James Shelby Sr and Marietta Pruitt Holland, he was always called by his middle name Shelby.

Shelby had respiratory problems starting at an early age. As a teenager, he and his family moved to Texas to help him. Unfortunately, his father, a minister, was unable to secure a church in Texas as he did not belong to the Texas Association and could not join until he had lived there a year. Needing a job, they returned to Alabama.

Shelby worked with his brother Roy for Tennessee Coal and Iron in the coal mines at Dolomite as a young man. After the family moved to East Tallassee, Shelby met Mary Lee Fike. They were married Nov. 10, 1932 by his father. Shelby worked for Tallassee Textile Mills and during World War II he worked as a cloth inspector in Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Shelby had a wry sense of humor and loved to tease people, especially his wife who has a wonderful personality and whom he loved dearly.

Shelby and Mary had one child; Shelby Lynwood Holland.
