Alva was the only son of Benjamin and Mary Jennie (Dance) Clark, both emigrants from Essex, England. His father farmed in Warren County, Iowa. He had sisters Edith L. and Alma.

He first married Icel Blanche Bales on 31 August 1916 in Lucas, IA. She was the daughter of Elzie and Mary Adeline (Pratt) Bales, born on 17 June 1898 in Warren County. Their children, born in Indianola:
1. Adyline G./Georgia Adeline, born 22 Feb 1917
2. Jean Hightower, born 19 Nov 1918
3. Marjorie Jane, born 13 Nov 1921
4. Alva Ben Jr., born 30 Apr 1923
5. Virginia A ., born about 1924
