Charles Edward Banning, 75, of Effingham, Illinois, formerly of Cowden, Illinois and St. Elmo, Illinois, passed away 6:37 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 28, 2005) in St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham, Illinois.

Mr. Banning was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Cowden, Illinois, the son of Tom and Mona Wonus Banning. He married Beverly L. Tallman on Nov. 8, 1950, in Shelbyville. She preceded him in death May 9, 1986. He married Donna Buchanan Wolf on April 29, 1991, in Henderson, Kentucky.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville, Illinois, with Herschel Cosart officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday with 7:45 p.m. Masonic rites, and one hour before services. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, Illinois, with military rites by Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials: donor's choice.

He was a graduate of Cowden High School and attended Sparks Business College, Shelbyville. He volunteered for and served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was sent to the U.S. Army Cook and Bakers School in Atterbury, Indiana, and then to Camp Cook, California, and later transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington.

Mr. Banning was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Joppa Lodge 706, Cowden, Illinois. He was a member of Ainad Shrine and Valley of Danville Consistory. He loved traveling and playing cards. He was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and basketball. He enjoyed many retirement hours playing golf and always looked forward to weekly golf matches with his longtime regular foursome. He was a member of Effingham Country Club and served on the board of directors of First Trust Bank, Shelbyville, Illinois, for many years. He was a former member of the Cowden school board.

He was a grocer who owned and operated Banning Grocery in Cowden, Illinois, from 1953 to 1967. He then co-owned and operated St. Elmo Food Center, St Elmo, Illinois, until 1974. He became a licensed Realtor and was an associate of Crossroads Realty of Effingham, Illinois, until his retirement in 1979.

Surviving are his wife; mother, Mona Lamm of Shelbyville; children, Diane Standley of Effingham; Kim Banning and wife Sheri of St. Louis, Mo.; Kerry Banning and wife Jill of Florissant, Mo.; Julie Hicks and husband Eric of Effingham; Roger Wolf and wife Stephanie of Bloomington; Ron Wolf and wife Carla of Normal; Rick Wolf and friend Michelle Landa of El Paso; grandchildren, Shana Gatewood, Kala Banning, Chris Wolf, Lauren Wolf, Jennifer Wolf, Jake Wolf and Tracy Hicks.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and father.
