Jane Wamsley was born in Ontario Canada, daughter of Edward Wamsley and Mary Byrne. In 1870 the Wamsley family moved to Reno Township in Pope County, Minnesota. Jane married James Hart sometime between 1875 and 1880. From 1880 to 1900 the Harts lived on a farm in Westport Township of Pope County, but in the 1905 Minnesota Census she, her husband, and seven of their children were living in Norman County, which at that time included what is now Mahnomen County.
