Originally, they were headed for Dallas but Mary became ill and they stopped in Red River County near Clarksville. At that time, the Civil War was brewing and they moved into Lamar County.
John Crockett was a Virginian and a scholar. He was the sage of his town, Pattonville, and the authority on all questions asked by the community. It is said that Mary did beautiful work. She very likely was a good seamstress and quilter. Mary passed away on June 5, 1882 in Pattonville, Texas.
