Evelina Crockett was born in 1841 in Wytheville, Virginia, the daughter of John Montgomery Crockett and Mary Davis. She was named after her father's previous wife, Evelina Sanders, who died in 1827. Her half-brother, Stephen, named her, according to family story.

Evelina was seventeen when she and her family came to Texas from Virginia. Traveling by covered wagon and family carriage, they were on the road for three months from November to January.
