On 28 August 1946, Vernon married Dorothy McCorquedale in Brookings, South Dakota. They lived in Morton after their marriage.
Vernon served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked for the Cold Spring Granite Company and later for the Renville County Highway Department for 27 years. He was a member of the Morton United Methodist Church, the Redwood Falls Veterans' of Foreign Wars, and Morton American Legion Post.
Leonard Vernon Ahrens, of Morton, died at the age of 72, on Friday, 21 October 1988, at his home in Morton, Renville County, Minnesota.
He was survived by his wife; son, Lloyd, of Morton; daughters, Deborah (Ben) Mammen and Jolene (Albert) Lucio, all of Morton; five grandchildren; brothers, Howard of Brainard, LaVerne of St. Cloud, William of Franklin, and Floyd of Morton; and, sister, Loretta (Lyle) Emerson of Kasota. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Misty Jo Ahrens, and four brothers.
Visitation was after 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, 23 October, and from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Monday, 24 October, at the Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls, and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at the church on Monday.
The funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m., on Monday, 24 October 1988, at the United Methodist Church in Morton.
Vernon was buried in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota.
