Abraham Hedgepeth a/k/a Hedgpeth.(b. abt. 1767), was born in Nansemond County, Virginia, and moved as a child to Nash County, North Carolina. It is possible that he is the son of Benjamin Hedgepeth (circa. 1741), and Charity Braswell (b. April 5, 1734), although this relationship is yet unproven. [1][2][3]

In July 1782, at the age of 15-17, Abraham enlisted for 18 months as a private with the 1st North Carolina Regiment under Captain Peter Bacot. He trained in Charleston, South Carolina, and then marched to James Island where his company met and skirmished with a number of British soldiers. After serving 14 months he was discharged. In 1833, he received a pension for his service. Certificate #29820, issued March 4, 1833, rate $46.66, per annum, commenced March 4, 1831, Act of June 7, 1832, North Carolina Agency. Dated: 28 Apr 1843, Nash County, North Carolina.

Place of burial unknown.

Notes:

[1] Relationship unproven. Given his purported age, Abraham Hedgepth could have been a cousin or nephew of Benjamin Hedgepeth. In 1782, the only Hedgepeth living in Nash County, North Carolina was Benjamin Hedgepeth. Abraham's absence could be attributable to being in the Revolutionary War. In the 1840 Census of Pensioners, Abraham indicates that he is 72 years old, which would make his birth abt. 1767, rather than 1761.

[2] There were only three other Hedgepeth's living in Nash County, North Carolina before 1800. Jesse, Benjamin and Peter Hedgepeth. Peter Hedgepeth can be eliminated as the father of Abraham Hedgepeth since he died in Union, South Carolina, listing only one heir. A Jesse "Hitchpeth" is found in the 1790 Census indicating that he and his wife are over the age of 16 years. However, no other documentation has yet been located on his relationship.

[3] Col. William Eaton's Muster List taken in 1754, list three Hedgepeth's living in Granville County, North Carolina. Osborn Hedgepeth; Carter Hedgepeth, and Giles Hedgepth. In addition, to these three, a Ralph Hedgepeth is also known to have been a resident. However, these individuals appear to predate the arrival of Abraham Hedgepeth in Nash County.

[4] The 1830 Census for Franklin, North Carolina, reflects Jesse Webb, born b. bef. 1760.
