My Grandpa

I don't remember my grandfather, He died when I was only 7 weeks old. He lost his father when he was only 8 years old and was along with his brother and two sisters put in an orphanage because his Mother could not care for them. She along with her eldest daughter went to work in a hotel dining room to support themselves. This was in 1874 . My grandfather stayed in the home for a year and then run away and lived on his own, he worked for farmers and such. I found him in the 1880 census when he was 14 working on a farm. He must have had a hard time. The next time I find him is in the city directory and he is the head of the household and has his Mother, sister and brother living with him. He marries twice, the last time to my grandmother and he worked for the Railroad. My father loved and respected his father very much. Wish I could have known you grandpa, but I will see you in Heaven someday. The picture that is on this memorial is the only picture that our family has of grandpa, as grandma had a fire in the early 1950's and all of her pictures burnt. So it is treasured to us.
