Houston Wayne "Hugh" Etheridge was born on April 14, 1854 in Tennessee, the son of George Washington "Wash" Etheridge (1829–1895) and Eliza Jane (Dickerson) Etheridge (1833–1916).
He had been married about 1874 to Willie Ann Robertson (ca 1855–ca 1895).
Hugh had been a policeman in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, but in the mid-1920s he resigned and moved to Trousdale County where he had been a merchant on Hunter's Point Road for some years. He was also a member of the Church of Christ and Hartsville Lodge 113 F&AM.
Living in Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee, he was 75 years old when he was found dead in bed at his store on November 6, 1929 and had died of angina pectoris.
Survivors included sons John Washington Etheridge, Willie Alonzo "Lon" Etheridge and Leondrice Wayne "Lee" Etheridge and daughters Mrs J J Preston and Mrs J R Chumley.
Funeral Services were held at the Etheridge home, and burial was on November 7th in Spring Hill Cemetery. [It is noted that his Trousdale County Death Certificate lists his death as being in Castalian Springs, but that small community is in Sumner County, not Trousdale County. The death as listed in a previous paragraph is from his original obituary.]
