JAMES KEITH ESTES
James Keith Estes, 77, of Ithaca, died June 3, 2007, surrounded by his wife and children.
Throughout his life, James Estes shared his kindness and an enduring quiet wisdom. Jim was strong, his courage never wavering in his 35-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. He reminded us that we are much more than our bodies.
Jim was born July 1, 1929 in Oklahoma City to Keith and Lillian Estes. He was the older brother to Jerry and Tad growing up in Topeka, Kansas. In 1952, Jim married Anita Honeyman, his wife of 55 years.
After graduating from Washburn University in 1952 with a degree in fine arts and working for several years as a staff artist at Kansas State University, Jim accepted a position as a graphic designer at Cornell University. Jim's talent and passion for his work was reflected in the numerous national awards that recognized his leadership and creativity. In 1980, he accepted the ACE Award of Excellence, an honor for lifetime achievement in the graphic arts. After Jim retired from the university in 1985, art continued to play a deeply meaningful role in his life. His love of art and design carries on in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Jim leaves with his family some beautiful images. A kid in Kansas riding his pony in the neighborhood streets. Climbing Longs Peak in Estes Park, Colorado. His first date with Anita, sharing a soda pop in a booth at Potwin Drug Store in Topeka. Cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners for nearly seven decades. Playing past sundown at the Cornell golf course. Traversing the rocks of Acadia National Park in Maine. His animated readings of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas every Christmas eve. Leading a chorus of "yee-haw!" each time the car crossed a state line as he drove his family across the country.
Jim will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Anita; their three children and spouses, Cynthia and Norman (Smith) of Ithaca, David and Kate (Bevington) of Ithaca, Janet and Stephen (Downs) of Princeton, New Jersey; and six grandchildren, Sarah and Lillian, Sylvia and Zeke, and Olivia and Theo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James K. Estes Memorial Fund, care of Tompkins Trust Company, Attn: Rich Dolge, PO Box 460, Ithaca, NY 14851. Contributions in Jim's memory will recognize the importance of direct care and individuals who provided Jim with exceptional care in recent years.
