Helen Mae Murphey Bartow
Helen Mae Murphey was born August 15, 1928 to Earl Wesley and Mildred Lembke Murphey at Upper Logan, Oregon. She joined 5 brothers and 1 sister and they were joined by one more brother four years later. In 1932 the family moved to Maple Creek near the town of Siltcoos. There were several moves before settling on the farm at Five Mile Creek. Helen attended first through eighth grade at the Five Mile School. She graduated from Reedsport High School, met and married Bert Bartow when he returned from the service. They were married Nov. 24, 1946 in Reedsport and have three daughters: Nancy, Judy, and Rebecca. When the youngest, Becky, started kindergarten, Helen went to work at the Reedsport Police Department where "Mac" McCabe was police chief who later became Justice of the Peace for the Douglas County Reedsport branch. Helen was hired as the court clerk/baliff. She worked there until her retirement. Helen spent her retirement years active in many volunteer organizations and groups. She was a member of the Rebekah and Oddfellow Lodges and American Legion Auxiliary. She drove for Dial-A-Ride for many years and recently volunteered at the City Court as Baliff. Helen played many years on a city volleyball team and started bowling at the age of 67.
Her parents, husband Bert, five brothers (Fred, Kenneth, Walter, John, and Gordon Murphey) preceded her in death. She is survived by sister Jean Harris and brother Leo Murphey; daughters Nancy(Rick) Stewart, Judy(Bill) Dickson, Rebecca (Dan) Young, 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
