Wanda Valjean Hughes, daughter of Earl & Frances (Strayer) Hughes, was born July 19, 1982, in Franklin, and passed away in an Omaha hospital October 20, 1943, at the age of eleven years, two months, and twelve days.
Valjean had been sick for seven weeks at home. Her case was diagnosed as tuberculosis and she was taken to the Kearney sanitarium for treatment. Her case did not respond to treatment at Kearney, so she was taken to Omaha where it was found she had an incurable disease. She passed away five days after being received there.
She was in the fifth grade of the Franklin public schools, regular attendant of the Congregational Church School and a member of the junior choir of that church.
In addition to her parents she leaves seven sisters and two brothers. They are: Doris, Viola, Nettie, Erla, Wilma, Kay Frances, Margaret, Donald and Richard.
Funeral services were held at the Hutchins Funeral Home conducted by Rev. William Richards. Mrs. Ida Medinger and L. L. Goldsbury each sang a solo, and rendered a duet, Mrs. Ralph Douglas was at the piano.

The following text comes from Carol Strayer granddaughter of Cyrus "Henry" & Margaret Ellen (Niceschwander) Strayer, great granddaughter of Miley & Elmira Strayer, and 2nd great granddaughter of Martin & Rachel (Raylla) Strayer.
Wanda would have been the Aunt of Dora Elaine Hughes.
