He served in The United States Air Force for which he served 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He was a Chef in the USAF and was stationed at Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX. On September 10, 1952 he married the love of his life Betty Lee Robinson Mercer. He was a Scout Master for The Boy Scouts of America. He was also a Master Mason for sixty plus years in the Masonic Lodge of Edna. He worked as a Corrosion Engineer with various oil and gas companies in Houston, Texas. In his later years he did independent contracting.In 1984, he inherited his parent’s property. In 2010 this property became a 100 year member in the Family Land Heritage Program for the State Of Texas, which is a 100 years of continuous agriculture production. Cattle ranching, vegetable gardening, animals, hunting, outdoors, nature and family were his true love.
John was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend that will be missed dearly.
In addition to his parents John is preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Jo Malone and Lura Glynn Bain; brother, Clifton Viron Mercer.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, from 9:30-10:30 A.M. with a Funeral Service to begin at 10:30 A.M., in the First United Methodist Church in Edna. Burial will follow in the Luling Cemetery Association approximately 2:00pm. Reverend Adam Knapp will be officiating.
