Mrs. Lucas was born May 2, 1928 in Lamesa, Texas to Elsie (Donaldson) and Vester Kidd. She had lived briefly in Seminole from 1954 to 1956, but was most recently a resident of Odessa where she had lived for the past 40 years. She was employed at Buckner Children's Home in Lubbock for ten years as a cook, and had cooked at Furr's Cafeteria for five years before that. She had also worked in Capitan, New Mexico where she ran the Smoky Bear Restaurant. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lucas had a great love for her family. She made all of her children's clothing for many years, and was a gentle spirit who raised her girls to be ladies, teaching them to cook and sew. The family remembers living in Indiana on a farm with no running water, and the Baptist church on the hill they always attended. She adored her grandchildren, and she always looked forward to family reunions. She enjoyed being surrounded by family, and they especially loved her cinnamon rolls. Gardening, crocheting, and sewing filled her spare time.

Vestalene Lucas passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents; by three brothers, Dale, Marvelle, and Truman Kidd; and by one sister, Maxine Wright. She is survived by one son, Rev. Larry Lucas and wife Linda of Littlefield, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Tobar and husband Luciano of Gardendale, Texas and Rhonda Wright and husband Randy of Farmersville, Texas; one brother, Frank Kidd of Carrollton, Texas; two sisters, Illa Sue Courtney of Lubbock, Texas and LaRue Courtney of Odessa, Texas; ten grand-children Fawn Walker, Brady Hertzog, Cory and Dallas Lucas, Adrian, Simon, Daniel, and Nathan Tobar, and Justin and Rachel Wright; eleven great-grandchildren Patrick, Jordan, and Bailey Hertzog, Joshua and Jasmine Walker, Brayleigh Wright, Mya Tobar, Otto Killian, and Esai, Zephaniah, and Maraih DeLeon.
