Ollie Bales, One of County's Oldest Citizens, Dies at 96
Oliver (Ollie) Hawkins Bales of Albany, who at 96 was one of Gentry county's oldest citizens, died on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Gentry County Memorial hospital.

Mr. Bales, the son of Ann Rhodus and William H. Bales, was born in Clay county, Mo., on June 15, 1869. At an early age, he moved to Harrison county. He was united in marriage with Lucy C. Pratt, of the New Castle community, on Sept. 1, 1889. They farmed until 1905 when they moved to the East Clay street home here.

They were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Cleta Ward of New Hampton, who survives; and Mrs. Beatrice Hill, who died in 1959. Mrs. Bales preceded him in death in 1938.

When a young man, Ollie became a member of the New Castle Christian church and later transferred his membership to the Albany Christian church.

For more than 50 years, he served this community as a carpenter and painter, earning a reputation as being a conscientous and dependable workman. He was past 85 when he painted the last houses.

On April 10, 1941, Mr. Bales was united in marriage with Mrs. Berla Coulter [sic-s/b Monger]. She shared his interest in gardening and together, they served as custodians of the Christian church for more than 10 years.

Although he was 96 years of age, Mr. Bales still desired to care for himself in his own home.

Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Friday afternoon, Nov. 12, at the Brooks-Cochell Funeral Chapel with Rev. George W. Manning officiating. Interment was in the Grandview cemetery.
