History of Clay and Platte Counties by the St. Louis National Historical Society 1885: "... of Southern birth and antecedents, he entered the Confederate Army in 1862, and was captured at the battle of Pea Ridge. Soon after he was taken sick, and though his wife succeeded in transferring him from Alton [prison in Illinois] to his home, he died two days after reaching there. Mr. Barbee's father was a general in the Revolutionary War."
