Edmund SHIRLEY (a photographer, with premises in Praed Street, Paddington) and his girlfriend Rosetta GREENWOOD committed suicide using cyanide on 2 Dec 1859 in a bedroom at the Railway Coffee house on City Road.

His note to his father (Thomas SHIRLEY) complained of his stepmother, Sarah (nee NORRINGTON), being responsible for the death of his sister, Victoria Amy SHIRLEY.

Edmund's sister, Victoria Amy SHIRLEY, had drowned herself in the River Lea in Kent in March 1859 [Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, 15 March 1859, page 2]

Edmund also said that his stepmother, Sarah (nee NORRINGTON), had done something else that was so bad that Edmund could not bring himself to mention it in his suicide note.

Edmund asked to be buried together with Rosetta but, sadly, this doesn't seem to have happened.
[Morning Advertiser, 3 December 1859, page 3]

Thomas SHIRLEY, his father, had married two NORRINGTON sisters, who both died relatively young. He then married their cousin, Sarah NORRINGTON. Thomas SHIRLEY, cut his own throat with a razor in April 1863 [Kentish Gazette, 14 April 1863, page 7]

Thomas SHIRLEY, Edmund's father left his estate to his widow Sarah (NORRINGTON) SHIRLEY.

Edmund is supposedly buried in Abney Park Cemetery with his father, Thomas, and brother Frederick (1830-1870).

Edmund's brother, Albert, emigrated to Utah soon after Edmund's death, and joined the Mormon Church, dedicating the rest of his life to good works.
