On October 5, 1939, Bernice had been living in Howe, LaGrange County, Indiana, for three years, doing housework, when she married Ralph Gustave KUCHTA, a machinist, born March 1, 1911, in Michigan. By the time of the 1940 census, Ralph had begun using as his surname the surname of his mother's third husband, and thereafter he was "Ralph SCHMIDT." Bernice and Ralph moved to Phoenix, Arizona, before 1951. Ralph died in May 1972.
Funeral arrangements were by Messinger Indian School Mortuary, in Scottsdale, where a Rosary was said for Bernice. Graveside service was on March 8, 2003. Obituary appeared in The Arizona Republic on March 7, 2003.
