George William Bowman, Sr. 88 of North Tazewell, VA formerly of Burke’s Garden, VA went to his eternal reward Sunday, July 23, 2017. Born February 3, 1929 at Horsepen, VA, he was a son of the late Allen and Ethel Payne Bowman. He resided in Horsepen until serving in the US Army from 1951-1954. After serving in the Army, he moved to Burke’s Garden where he did what he loved and enjoyed 18 years farming, horses, and raising his family. A few years later, he began working in the coal mines and George and his family moved to North Tazewell, VA and resided there for the last 45 years. To many George was known as “Paw” and he enjoyed life as being everyone’s “Paw”. George was a man of his word who had a strong faith in his Lord and Savior and loved gospel music on his record player. He was a faithful and lifelong member of Horsepen Church of Christ. “Paw” Bowman will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Allen Bowman, Jr. and Edward Paris Bowman; sisters, Hilda Jane Bowman, Margie Kirby, and Louise Shortt.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Katherine Bowman; daughters, Joyce Ann Hancock and husband, Jerry of Tazewell, VA and Bertha Jane Hatfield and husband, Rusty of Abingdon, VA; sons, George William “Willie-Bill” Bowman, Jr. and wife, Becky of Tazewell, VA and James “Jim” Allen Bowman and wife, Wendy of Greenback, TN; sisters, Elizabeth Dalton and husband, J.W. of Rural Retreat, VA, Hazel Moore and husband, Hubert of Abbs Valley, VA, and Janet Weeks and husband, Albert of Beckley, WV; grandsons, Jackson Layne Hancock and wife, Ashley and Jeremy Andrew Hancock; great grandsons, Chase Elijah Bowman, Tyler Andrew Hancock, Caleb Layne Hancock, and Riley Keith Hancock; and his four legged great grandson, “Diesel” Hancock.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA where funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM with Walter Schwitzerlett and Tony Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell and Virginia National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, VA. Pallbearers are David Bowman, Chase Bowman, Rusty Hatfield, Steven Bowman, Jack Hancock, and Roger Dalton.
