Jennings was one of the eleven children born to John Oswald Alderfer and Delilah Ulrich, who married on 3 Oct 1891 in Marshall County, Indiana. Their eleven children were: Alpheus Earnest “Pete” (17 Nov 1892 – 5 Jul 1965); Ferd Delbert (24 Jun 1894 – 11 Feb 1961); (dau) Utincie (ca. 1897 – 12 Mar 1899); Lela A. (23 Oct 1898 – 18 Dec 1976), who married Neal V. Goff; Flossie Gertrude (12 Jun 1900 – 26 Nov 1992), who married George Loser; Ida Irene (19 Nov 1901 – 6 Jun 1988), who married James Smith; an unnamed infant (b./d. between 1900-1910); Clayton F. (1 Mar 1905 – 7 May 1990), who married Julia Putcharen; Jennings Bryan (22 May 1908 – 30 Dec 1987); Lodema F. (8 Mar 1911 – 10 Apr 1993), who married Lert Elmer Shidaker and (unknown) Johnson; and Ruth (14 Apr 1915 – 4 Jan 2000), who married Henry Kendall.

Just before the 1900 Census, the family lost daughter and sister Utincie. (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 16 Mar 1899 pg. 5) “The two-years-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Alderfer, of near Bethel church, died Saturday evening. The funeral was held at Bethel church Monday at 2 o’clock. Interment at the Bethel cemetery.”

I found Jennings’ parents and older siblings on the 1900 Census, living in Walnut Township (Argos area), Marshall Co., Indiana. John Alderfer, aged 32, was noted as a day laborer. Lila (aka Delilah), aged 26, reported that she had had five children, but that only four had survived to that census, a sad reminder of the loss of two-year-old daughter Utincie a year earlier. There with their parents were Alpheus, aged 7, Ferdie, aged 5, Lela, aged 1, and Flossie, not yet a month old.

The family was still living in the Argos area when the 1910 Census came around. John Alderfer, aged 43, was farming. Lila, aged 36, reported that she had had nine children, but that only seven had survived to that census. There with their parents were Alpheus, aged 17, Ferd, aged 15, Lela, aged 11, Flossie, aged 9, Ida, aged 8, Clayton, aged 5, and Jennings, a month shy of being 2 years old.

Seven years after that census, the family lost husband and father John Alderfer on 7 Oct 1917, aged 50.

The 1920 Census caught up with the family still living in Walnut Township. Head of household was Delilah Alderfer, widowed, aged 46. There with her were the eight children—Alpheus, aged 27, Ferd, aged 24, Flossie, aged 19, Ida, aged 17, Clayton, aged 14, Jennings, aged 11, Lodema, aged 8, and Ruth, aged 4.

That same year, Jennings appears to have had a health issue. (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 13 May 1920 pg. 4) “Jennings Alderfer is some better, but still in a very critical condition. He was given a box of fruit by the Junior S.S. Class, for which the family express their sincere thanks.” (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 20 May 1920 pg. 5) “Jennings Alderfer is much better since having his limb lanced Sunday morning but is still confined to his bed.”

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 30 Aug 1923 pg. 5) “Ralph North and Jennings Alderfer returned home from Kamp Knox, Kentucky where they spent the last thirty days in military training.”

On 11 Dec 1924, Jennings’ mother Delilah married German immigrant George Mast. It was also a second marriage for George. He had previously married Reda Manona Thompson on 24 Oct 1915, and they had two daughters together—Annabelle and Georgia. That first marriage ended in divorce.

Jennings appeared with his mother and step-father on the 1930 Census, living in Green Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. George Mast, aged 56, was farming for a living. Lila, aged 56, was keeping house. There with their parents/step-parents were George’s daughter Georgia Mast, aged 11, and Lila’s two children—Clayton and Jennings Alderfer, aged 25 and 21, Jennings working as a section hand for the railroad. Also living with the family was George’s older brother Fred Mast, aged 61.

The Alderfer’s lived in a small town with a local newspaper that often noted their family gatherings, such as this one in 1934. (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 28 Jun 1934 pg. 4) “SURPRISE ON FERD ALDERFER Ferd Alderfer was pleasantly surprised Sunday when relatives and friends came to his home to help celebrate his birthday. A bountiful dinner was enjoyed at noon. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. George (Delilah) Mast, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. (Alpheus) Alderfer and children, Mr. and Mrs. George (Flossie) Loser and son, Merl, of Noblesville; Clayton and Ruth Alderfer, Mr. and Mrs. James (Ida) Smith of Bourbon; Mr. and Mrs. Jennings (Olive) Alderfer and children, of Plymouth; Mrs. Mary Freese and Miss Ella Barr of Noblesville; Miss Georgia Mast, Jacob R. Poyser and Mrs. Ferd Alderfer and children, Wayne, Bernice and Joyce.”

Within a year of that census, Jennings married Olive Grace Bolinger, the daughter of George Raymond Bolinger and Sarah E. Voreis. Jennings and Olive had at least three children—Franklin Lee (6 Nov 1932 – 25 Dec 1942), Georgianna Marie (b. 26 Sep 1934), and Forest “Frosty” Alan Alderfer (6 Sep 1937 – 18 Jun 1987).

The five of them appeared together on the 1940 Census, living in Center Township (Plymouth area), Marshall Co., Indiana. Jennings, aged 31, was working for a radiator manufacturer. Olive, aged 28, was keeping house. There with their parents were Franklin, aged 7, Georgianna, aged 5, and Forrest, aged 2.

The unthinkable happened two years later on Christmas Day 25 Dec 1942. Jennings’ family was spending the day at his brother Ferd’s home. Jennings and Olive’s ten-year-old son Franklin was outside watching his cousins shooting baskets and wanted to try his luck. He launched the ball into the air and then collapsed after the effort, his heart failing him. So sad.

Life went on as it tends to do and Jennings and Olive’s other children married. Georgianna acquired Kanouse as her surname, and Forest married Betty (unknown surname).

And the family stayed close. (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 15 Oct 1959 pg. 6) “Mrs. Flossie Alderfer and Connie of Noblesville were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Alderfer. Additional dinner guests on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Smith and Mrs. Lela Goff, all of Bourbon, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Alderfer of Knox, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Alderfer of South Bend, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings Alderfer of Plymouth and Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Ruth Alderfer) Kendall and family of Argos.”

About 1981, Jennings and Olive would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They shared about fifty-seven years together before death parted them, first claiming Jennings five days after Christmas on 30 Dec 1987 at age 79. Olive lived another twelve years without him, passing into the light on 6 Nov 1995 at age 87. They rest side by side here in Oak Hill.
