Emma Perrin Cothran McMahan, wife of the late Thomas Edward McMahan, Colonel USAF Ret., died Oct. 10, 2000. Born in Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 4, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Sally (Midge) McAden Cothran and the late James Sproull Cothran Jr. Mrs. McMahan was educated in Charlotte, N.C., public schools, attended Sophie Newcomb College, New Orleans, La., and graduated from Queens College, Charlotte, with an AB degree in English. She did private teaching in high school and college French, and was a reporter, feature writer and columnist for The Charlotte Observer. She organized a French literary club which became affiliated with L'Alliance Francaise. During World War II she conducted a radio news program for high school students, sponsored by the Junior League of Charlotte.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville and the Junior League of Greenville. She was active in church work for Westminster and First Presbyterian Churches and was a frequent contributor to The Greenville News and The Greenville Piedmont letters to the editor. She was a former member of the Toastmistress Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Military-Civilian Club of San Antonio, Texas. She was a charter member of the Charlotte Little Theatre. She was an organizer and first president of the Park Avenue Duplicate Bridge Club, and a former president of the Greenville Duplicate Bridge Club. For many years she directed a monthly duplicate bridge game for novice players. She was a Life Master member of ACBL and a qualified director.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Ellen McMahan Ramsay Wilhelm and Sally "Midge" McMahan Keene; a son, Capt. Thomas Edward McMahan Jr., who died heroically in Vietnam in 1965; a granddaughter, Ann Perrin Ramsay Burke; and a sister, Sally Cothran Lambeth. She is survived by .....(names omitted)
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with Dr. Randy Kowalski officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Queens College Alumni Fund or to Disabled American Veterans, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, SC 29601.
