Thomas Meloan Owens III, "T3",

passed away Thursday, January 31st 2013, at Banner Desert Hospital at the age of 66. He was survived by his daughters, Tomi Christine Owens and Tonia Marie Owens and his grandchildren Eoin Costello, Neve Sopeland and Thomas Costello. He was also survived by his mother, Hazel Marie Owens and his sisters Gwen Huffman and SueAnn Owens-Singer, son-in-law Daniel Costello and his former wife Vicki Smith Dietz with whom he remained friends.
Tom was the son of Thomas M. Owens, Jr. (deceased) and Hazel Marie Owens (née Elliott). He descended from Arizona pioneers, both branches of his family having resided and farmed in the Tempe area since the 1890s. Tom was raised on the Owens' family farm in the Kyrene District south of Tempe with his sisters. He graduated from Tempe High School and attended MCC and ASU.
In 1966, Tom joined the Army Special Forces, serving a tour of duty as a Green Beret in Vietnam and receiving the Bronze Star Medal. Later, he began a career with the Salt River Project as a Zanjero. He remained with SRP for 25 years until his retirement. Tom loved his two girls, adored his grandchildren and enjoyed exploring the blue roads with his faithful dog Mollie. Services will be private at the Owens family cabin.
