Hazel Marie Owens of Ahwatukee passed away on June 27, 2017. Hazel was born on January 2, 1920 to Reginald Elliott and Emma Marie Stewart Elliott. Reginald and Marie homesteaded land at what is now Pecos and 40th Street in Ahwatukee, later buying two farms on Elliot Rd. in the Kyrene Community. Hazel met the love of her life in 4th grade. She and Thomas Meloan Owens, Jr. were married June 28th, 1940. They had been married 66 years when Thomas passed away. Thomas' family had also homesteaded land in the Kyrene Community and Thomas and Hazel moved to the Owens family farm after marrying. Hazel is survived by daughters SueAnn Owens-Singer, (Jack Singer) and Gwendolyn Jo Huffman. Her son Thomas Meloan Owens, III (T3) preceded her in death. She is also survived by former daughter-in-law Vickie Smith Dietz. Hazel attended Tempe and Kyrene schools. She graduated from Tempe High School and attended Arizona State College. She was active in PTA, Girl Scouts and Tempe Women's Club. Her hobbies were sewing, bridge clubs and canasta parties. Hazel found pleasure in helping family and friends. She loved time spent at their cabin at Mormon Lake. One of Hazel's greatest joys was becoming a grandmother to Tomi (Daniel Costello) and Tonia Owens (Jon Eagan) and Eric and Hilary Huffman and great grandmother to Eoin and Thomas Costello and Neve Sopeland. Hazel was predeceased by her sister Helen Painter Polingo and her stepsister Mae Belle Siebert. The family wishes to thank the kind and loving care givers
and staff at Mt. Park Senior Living and Hospice of the Valley for all they did for our beloved mother and us. At Hazel's request, there will be no services. A private celebration of life will be held at the Owens family cabin.
